Course description

This course provides fundamental knowledge of the structure, operating principles and functionality of ERTMS and the ETCS train protection system, as well as their interfaces with conventional systems. Participants learn the relevant technical terms, rules and procedures for commissioning and train operations, and understand their significance in practical operations. Building on this knowledge, they apply the rules by entering train data correctly, carrying out test runs, and safely handling train and shunting movements in regular operations, special cases and disruptions as the situation requires.

Content

  • Participants learn how to meet the requirements for ETCS operation, including the test run, start-up sequence, correct entry of train data and Start of Mission.
  • The course covers how to safely commence train journeys under STM PZB/LZB and under ETCS Level 0 and Level 2, with and without main signals.
  • The course explains automatic level transitions and the rules for train journeys in operating modes FS, OS and SR, including passing a signal at danger and continuing the journey afterwards.
  • The rules for shunting operations and the targeted use of override functions are also covered.
  • Another key focus is ETCS instructions and the safe handling of selected disruptions, such as radio or system failures, incorrect level transitions, trackside equipment problems or balise errors.
  • The course also provides fundamental system knowledge of ERTMS/ETCS, including system structure and functionality, levels, operating modes, National Values, and the interaction between infrastructure and the vehicle.
  • Finally, the DMI, the display of target speed and distance information, and the meaning of the displayed symbols and softkeys are explained.

The training consists of two parts:

  • ERTMS Fundamentals
The fundamentals are taught through an e-learning course on our CargoAcademy and form the basis for the rest of the course. The e-learning can be completed at any time and from any location before the start of Part 2. Around two days (16 teaching units) are allocated to the fundamentals. Knowledge is assessed by a module exam on the first day of Part 2. Passing this exam is a prerequisite for Part 2.

  • ETCS Level 2 for Germany
In Part 2, the theory and practical simulator training cover all the content required for successful completion. On the final day, participants’ knowledge is assessed in a written and practical exam. This part is delivered entirely in person at the course venue and comprises four days of training (32 teaching units) and one examination day.
